Outfit Post: The Morning After The Night Before

It’s funny how quickly time flies and how much your life can change before you even know it. This year marks a whole decade since I graduated and it feels like I’ve experienced several lifetimes over the last ten years! Being a bright-eyed, broke graduate is a very distant memory now, as are those heady, party-hard student days. Life is thankfully a lot more serene and settled now.

It’s funny how quickly habits change; nights out have been replaced with nights in, I choose green tea over vodka, reading is a pleasure rather than a chore and exercise is a part of my vocabulary! My current choices may sound dull but priorities change, my indulgences are now travel and investment pieces rather than high street purchases and nights out. That’s not to say I’m a hermit, I just prefer a bloody good Negroni to a Smirnoff Ice! The novelty of going “out-out” is long gone for me, I went from student nights out straight to endless fashion events.

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes the best way to blow off some steam is a night out. But for me, the best part of going out is the getting dressed and getting ready part – the anticipation and build up. Nowadays, I’ll book in to get my hair and make up done if it’s a special night and I want to feel good, this is always my highlight!

I also like the end of the night, the mixture of elation, exhaustion and sweaty happiness. At university, this meant walking home in a giggly group dissecting the events of the night as daylight broke. The juxtaposition of our dresses and heels still stale from the night before and the fresh morning air, full of the sounds of birds chirping always amused me. This was actually the inspiration behind this outfit, an ode to the walk of shame, if you will.

I absolutely adore this Zara shirt…dress…thing. I’ve had it for about a year and still can’t figure out whether it’s a long shirt or a short dress. Sometimes I wear it as I have here, with shorts underneath for safety but sometimes I wear it to work with skinny jeans. I paired the shirt with my favourite Next heels, a little fluffy and boudoir-esque to add to the overall vibe of the outfit. Now that I’m typing this all out, it feels a little silly to be inspired by such a specific event and time but hey ho, that’s fashion. As Coco Chanel herself stated, “Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

Next AW14 Preview

Have you been to Next recently? It is an absolute treasure trove of on-trend pieces, essentially everything you need for AW14, from white minimalist backpacks to shiny brogues and buckled boots. I visited the team at Next during the AW14 preview at the charming Ham Yard Hotel in Soho to have a sneak peek and I was totally blown away. I wanted everything!
The collection features lots of sumptuous textures so it was great to get up close and appreciate with the soft knits and faux fur. Soft pastel pinks with scattered embroidery, lashings of lace, cool grey knitwear and super glam leopard print faux fur coats were my stand out pieces.
The collection is supplemented with really strong accessories; huge plaid scarves in camel shades, minimalist, structured bags and the shoes… Colourful, patterned courts added a real splash of colour while minimalist single strap sandals are amplified with architectural heel detailing. Next has really hit the nail on the head this autumn/winter, the collection successfully translates the key AW14 trends into a really wearable collection.

Which handbag are you?

Even as a certified shoe gal, I have to admit, I love a good handbag. I tend to favour big bags for every day wear and then proceed to wear them to death (literally), so when I stumbled upon this cute handbag infographic from Next, I knew I had to try it and share it with you. Unsurprisingly, I'm a hobo as I love big bags with a bit of hardwear. Which bag are you?

Next Christmas press day 2011

Held at the cavernous Old Billingsgate Market, Next's Christmas 2011 press day was a bit of an extravaganza. Earlier in the afternoon, they had a star-studded fashion show with the likes of Jourdan Dunn and Geri Halliwell taking to the catwalk! By the time I arrived, everything had calmed down and I had plenty of time to peruse the collections. Daywear is bold, bright and cosy with lots of snuggly puffa jackets to keep you warm and ditsy prints to brighten up your wardrobe while eveningwear is heavily embellished with liberal smatterings of sequins and beading on gorgeous sheer fabrics and sumptuous jewel tones. The beaded flapper dresses were my favourites as well as the shoes. Those snakeskin heels have just a hint of Yves Saint Laurent about them, don't they?

The gorgeous homeware collections are also worth a mention, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I do love traditional red and green at Christmas but the icey blue, winter wonderland colours are so chic.

The kids collections are adorable, aren't they?! Really looking forward to dressing my neices up in the pretty party dresses. My nephew is a little too young to be sorting that dapper suit and bow tie combo but next year....!
