British Fashion Awards 2014

On Monday, I had the pleasure of attending the illustrious British Fashion Awards, held at the Colisium in London. I have to admit, I found the lure of Five Guys, which is just a stone’s throw away, far too tempting and ended up having a burger and chips beforehand much to the amusement of everyone there – I don’t think they find many false lashes, red lipped, gown wearing fashion gals chowing down on burgers there!
Introduced by host Jack Whitehall as “the most prestigious fashion event in the calendar”, the event attracted the great and the good of the fashion world including Anna Wintour, Suzy Menkes, Kate Moss, Karlie Kloss, Emma Watson, John Galliano and Nicolas Ghesquiere alongside the likes of Rihanna and Kylie who were on hand to present awards. A star-studded affair to say the least!

Many of the award winners thanked the late Professor Louise Wilson for her encouragement and sharp words for shaping their brands. One of the highlights of the night was a short, poignant tribute to the former MA Fashion course director at Central Saint Martins featuring models wearing runway looks from everyone from Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane to Simone Rocha and Leutton Postle, a testament to her lasting legacy on the fashion world.

Cara Delevigne was an early award winner, winning Model of the Year. The award was presented by the Amazonian Karlie Kloss and Joan Smalls with Poppy Delevigne giving a really sweet introduction to her youngest sister who she is “incredibly proud of”. Edward Enniful was honoured with the Isabella Blow award for Fashion Innovation, presented by Naomi Campbell and Rihanna. Edward gave a really inspiring acceptance speech, hammering home the point that if he could make it in fashion so could anyone, “regardless of race, colour, creed or background”.

The surprises of the night were the emotional, teary speeches from Anna Wintour and Victoria Beckham, who won the Outstanding Achievement and Brand of the Year awards respectively. Anna Wintour credited her children as her “biggest achievement” while Victoria Beckham thanked her team profusely and admitted that she’s a “pain in the bottom”.
