40 Winks hotel review

I've heard about 40 Winks hotel for years and stating there has always been on my 'to do' list. Created by interior design extraordinaire David Carter, the hotel has been used in countless photoshoots for the likes of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Tatler. Described as "the most beautiful small hotel in the world", I had mentally prepared myself to be taken aback by David's eccentric creativeness. The location is a little out of the way, on Mile End road in Stepney Green. I actually spent half an hour driving around the block before I discovered where it was. The beautiful Queen Anne townhouse is actually David's home and the venue for his famous 40 Winks events. There's a no shoe policy inside but there are plenty of comfy slippers to make you feel at home.

Once inside, I felt like a child in a sweet shop. Every nook and cranny had something peculiar and beautiful in it. The siting rooms looked like they were straight out of Annie Luebovitz's Alice in Wonderland editorial. I actually felt a little like Alice as I wondered from room to room, curiouser and curiouser. My room was on the top floor, a deliciously spacious, light and airy haven in the middle of bustling East London. The attention to detail in the room was incredible, from the stacked vintage suitcases and antique vanity mirror to the rustic shutters and a gorgeous mirrored dressing table. The bathroom was also beautiful, with a stunning roll top bath, baroque accents and a brass-covered wall.

40 Winks hotel is like an enchanting, romantic hideaway from the world, it's utterly beautiful and David is such a lovely gentleman. Unlike most soul-less hotels, it's actually very comfortable and homely. I couldn't help but feel like it was my own place after stepping foot through the door. The only downside is the location, it's a little out of the way for me but it is perfectly located for exploring East London's delights. I'd definitely recommend it to those who like to be inspired by beautiful surroundings and are looking for a hidden gem.
